Most U.S. Latinos oppose Obama's deportation policy: study
Most U.S. Latinos oppose Obama's deportation policy: study
Tim Gaynor Reuters 2:03 p.m. EST, December 28, 2011
(Reuters) - U.S. Hispanics disapprove of President Barack Obama's stepped up deportation program by a two-to-one margin, although support for the Democrat over top Republican rivals remains strong, according to a new study.
The Obama administration deported a record 396,000 unauthorized immigrants last year, up about 7 percent on 2008, the last year Republican George W. Bush was in office.
More than half those deported were convicted criminals, according to the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency.
The study by the non-partisan Pew Hispanic Center released Wednesday found 59 percent of Latinos surveyed disapproved of the way the Obama administration handles deportations.
Twenty-seven percent of the nationwide sample of 1,220 adult Latinos -- including 557 who said they were registered voters -- said they favored the policy, while 13 percent did not know or declined to answer.
Hispanics are the largest and fastest growing minority in the United States, totaling 50.5 million in 2010, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
They are an increasingly powerful bloc who supported Obama for president in 2008 by a two-to-one margin over Republican rival John McCain.
Despite rejection of his deportation program, support for Obama and the Democratic Party remains strong among Latino registered voters as he runs for reelection in 2012, the survey found.
In a hypothetical match-up against former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney, Obama wins 68 percent to 23 percent among Latino registered voters.
And in a match-up against Texas Governor Rick Perry, Obama wins the Latino vote 69 percent to 23 percent, it found.
"We found that among Latino registered voters ... there's still strong support for the president and still strong party affiliation to the Democrats among Hispanic registered voters," Mark Lopez, associate director of the Pew Hispanic Center and the lead author of the study, told Reuters.
The Pew Hispanic study found two-thirds -- 67 percent -- of Hispanic registered voters say they identify with or lean toward the Democratic Party, while 20 percent said the same about the Republican Party.
When asked which party has more concern for Hispanics, 45 percent said it is the Democratic Party, while 12 percent said it is the Republican Party. The share that identifies the Republican Party as the better party for Hispanics is up six percentage points.
The study has an overall margin of error of 3.6 percentage points, with a margin of error of 5.2 percentage points in the sample of those registered to vote.

Latinos loyal to Obama despite anger over president's immigration record
Research shows Latino voters continue to favour Obama over GOP candidates in spite of policy of deporting illegal immigrants

More than two-thirds of Latinos in the US disapprove of the Obama administration's record of deporting illegal immigrants, according to a Pew report published on Wednesday.
In spite of this, Obama and the Democrats continue to enjoy the overwhelming support of Latinos ahead of next year's White House and Congressional elections.
The findings come as Obama, after months of low ratings among the general public, is ending the year with a bounce in approval polls.
The loyalty of the Latino vote could prove crucial for Obama's re-election chances. With support for Obama near monolithic among African Americans and low among white males, the Latinos may hold the balance.
Obama put at risk Latino loyalty by pursuing an aggressive policy of deportations, the number of which are much higher than under the Bush administration.
After a backlash from Latino communities, the Obama administration earlier this year said it had rowed back on deportations, though Latino advocacy groups have expressed scepticism over whether this is the case.
Deportations have averaged 400,000 a year since 2009, when Obama became president, about 30% higher than under the Bush administration in his second term and double that of Bush, who courted Latinos, in his first term.
The Pew Hispanic Centre, in its annual survey of Latino attitudes, found 59% disapproved of the way the Obama administration is handling deportations compared with 27% who approve.
Many Latinos remain unaware that deportations have risen under Obama. Among those that do, the disapproval rate jumps to 77%. Bush attempted to win over Latinos to the Republican party, as did the 2008 presidential candidate John McCain. Bush and McCain backed proposals to reform immigration policy that would have provided a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants, but had to back down in the face of widespread hostility from Republicans in Congress and grassroots GOP members.
The rhetoric from the present Republican field, which largely hostile towards illegal immigrants with the exception of Newt Gingrich and, to a lesser extent, Rick Perry, has consolidated traditional Latino support for the Democrats.
The survey found that among registered Latino voters Obama enjoys the support of 68%, against 23% for Mitt Romney, the Republican frontrunner in the White House race. The ratio is almost identical if Obama were to face Perry.
Against McCain, Obama won 67% of the Latino vote against 31% for McCain.
Among Latinos who disapprove of Obama's handling of the deportations, his support drops to 57% to 34% against Romney, and 61% to 31% against Perry.
That drop is a warning for Obama. The Republicans do not have to secure a majority of the Latinos to win; they just need to make a significant inroad into the Democratic majority in swing states.
One option discussed among Republicans to win over Latinos is to appoint Marco Rubio, the senator from Florida who is of Cuban descent, as a vice-presidential running mate. But 54% of those surveyed said they had never heard of Rubio, or were unable to rate him. Rubio, one of the rising stars of the Republican party, has said he would not accept the vice-presidential job, insisting he is too young and that he needs to spend more time in the Senate.
The survey, carried out between 9 November and 7 December across the US, questioned 1,220 Latinos, of whom 557 said they were registered voters.
Obama's job approval ratings have, in line with polls of the general population, dropped among Latinos, from 58% in 2010 to 49%, according to the survey.
The survey was taken too early to reflect a general rise in Obama's approval ratings in recent weeks. The rise could be a result of public unhappiness with the Republican field or, more likely, tentative signs of improvement in the economy, the exit from Iraq or Obama's successful stand-off with Republicans in Congress last week over the payroll tax.
A Gallup poll showed his approval rating up to 46%, his highest since July. He stood at 41% at the start of December.

Obama struggling with Hispanics, but not as much as GOP

President Obama may be seeing his poll numbers ticking up after his successful standoff with House Republicans, but he's still struggling to keep Hispanics happy. His approval rating among Hispanics has fallen from 58% in 2010 to 49% this year, according to a report released today by the Pew Hispanic Center.
The Obama administration has increased the number of deportations in each of his first three years in office -- breaking records each time. Hispanics disapprove of that deportation strategy by more than a 2-1 margin (59% to 27%), according to the report.
Hispanics are nearly twice as likely as the general population (42% to 24%) to say that the government should be focused on a law that would legalize some of the country's 11 million illegal immigrants than plans to further increase border security.
Obama has been unable to achieve that goal, failing to coax Congress into passing a comprehensive immigration plan that would legalize some of those illegal immigrants, or even smaller bills that would legalize only those illegal immigrants brought to the U.S. as children.
Despite that gloomy picture, Hispanics still see Obama as a better option than the current GOP field. In hypothetical head-to-head matchups among registered Hispanic voters, Obama beats former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney 68%-23% and Texas Gov. Rick Perry 69%-23%.
"The head-to-heads in many respects look like what Obama won of the Latino vote in 2008," said Mark Hugo Lopez, associate director of the Pew Hispanic Center and co-author of the report. "No matter which demographic, the Democrats are generally seen as the better party for Latinos."
Obama's lead over Republicans among Hispanics will play a big role in 2012, as the Hispanic population in the U.S. continues to explode. The report found that 21.7 million Hispanics are eligible to participate in next year's election, an increase of more than 2 million since 2008.
The National Survey of Latinos conducted from Nov. 9 to Dec. 7 questioned 1,220 Hispanic adults in all 50 states and has a margin of error of +/- 3.6 percentage points.

I'm Hispanic and I hate Obama's support of illegal immigrants. Many Hispanics don't support amnesty for any illegal alien. I find articles like this to be a joke. Not every single Hispanic in the U.S. is pro-illegal.

12-29-2011, 06:49 AM #8non-partisan Pew Hispanic Center released Wednesday found 59 percent of Latinos surveyed disapproved of the way the Obama administration handles deportations.
Also, since approximately half of the Latinos in America are currently here illegally, a "59% opposition rate" to Obama's immigration policies is statistically biased because they surveyed illegal aliens and while Obama has made his deportation numbers look higher, in fact he has created an unprecedented form of amnesty for illegal aliens via dictatorial decree.
Unless you are a convicted murderer or rapist, or you just got caught walking across the border, you have no reason to worry bout Obama enforcing America's existing immigration laws.
