    Immigration enforcement bill gutted

A Mississippi-based immigration reform organization is upset that its state senators have passed a bill aimed at gutting an earlier piece of legislation designed to stem the tide of illegal immigration in the Magnolia State.

Dr. Rodney Hunt, president of the Mississippi Federation for Immigration Reform and Enforcement (MFIRE), says during a special session of the legislature, the Mississippi Senate passed SB 2005, which basically watered down some of the elements of SB 2988, which had unanimously passed the Senate and was overwhelmingly supported in the House.

Hunt says while Governor Haley Barbour signed the original bill, Barbour said he had reservations and wanted changes made during the special session. Hunt is hopeful the weakened bill will die in the House.

"We've talked to some House members. It's doubtful that it's going to be brought up in the House for a vote -- and so that hopefully will mean that this was an exercise in futility that they're trying to change this bill," Hunt shares. "And hopefully the original bill will go into effect on July 1."

Groups like the Mississippi Associated Builders and Contractors, according to Hunt, had supported the new bill because they want to continue to hire illegal immigrants without penalty. He says the bill will require certain employers with state contracts to use the electronic verification system to make sure their employees are authorized to work in the United States.
