GOP Hires La Raza for Redistricting

COMMENTARY | Every election cycle, the issues are always the same. But with the GOP sweeping the 2010 mid-term elections, especially on the state level, a divisive issue appears this year: redistricting. And in North
Carolina, residents are scratching their heads over the GOP's decision to hire a ranking member of La Raza to the redistricting committee. In an April 14 press release from the Americans for Legal Immigration, constituents learned that state Sen. Bob Rucho (R-Mecklenburg) hired Matty Lazo-Chatterton, a long time member of La Raza.
With over 300 affiliate organizations, the 40-year-old La Raza is the largest Hispanic special interest group in the United States. In recent years, the group has moved further left ideologically and received widespread criticism. Advocates of violence, an L.A. teacher was recently caught on video upholding La Raza's values by promoting race war. And in a more recent video, La Raza students hijacked a school board meeting. They were fighting for "Raza Studies" (race studies). These courses would only be open to Latinos and advocate the overthrow of the U.S. government.
Lazo-Chatteron is a proud member of this modern day Ku Klux Klan.
Congressional districts have been largely manipulated for at least half of a century across the entire nation. The process of gerrymandering allows committees to redraw congressional lines in order to give a certain party an edge in every election, virtually guaranteeing control in perpetuity. With the exception of the midterm victory of 1992, Democrats had held the majority in Congress for over 50 years. Gerrymandering was absolutely essential to holding onto power.
Now North Carolina has a chance to draw the district lines geographically equal, and that effort is being undermined. Worse yet, Sen. Rucho's response to outraged constituents may have exponentially amplified their concerns.
Constituents who voiced concerned over the matter were left unanswered for some time. Finally, state senators Rucho and House of Representatives Redistricting Chairman David Lewis issued an official statement. The

two representatives cited Lazo-Chatterton's ability to connect to the Hispanic community and her experience and involvement in the 2001 redistricting process. However, Democrats have held the North Carolina Senate majority for 130 years, mostly due to Democrats being involved in the process of redistricting.
The official statement from the elected representatives seems to scream their real answer in plain English. What it is saying to their constituents and party members is that they cannot connect with the Hispanic community, nor will they even try. Instead, they will partner with those who have helped maintain the status quo, who have polar opposite values, and do it in their constituents' names. Like it or not.

It is kind of difficult to understand a reason for such action? Very shocking and confusing information.
