    Students behind push for DREAM

    Bill would create path to legal status for children brought to U.S. illegally

    LEWISVILLE — Student activists dropped off more than 1,000 letters to U.S. Rep. Michael Burgess’ district office Friday urging him to support legislation to help children of illegal immigrants earn legal status.

    Most of the letters came from University of North Texas students and Denton-area residents, said Marcos Salas, a UNT student who is pushing for passage of the federal DREAM Act, which would create a path to legal residency for children brought to the U.S. illegally.

    Salas and three other students from various Texas colleges met privately for about 30 minutes with a member of Burgess’ district staff Friday morning. The visit was one of several planned throughout the day at North Texas congressional offices, culminating in an afternoon press conference in front of North Dallas High School.

    Rep. Burgess is a thoughtful independent conservative who strongly and consistently has opposed illegal immigration. His staff promptly answers every fax and email. Expressions of support for his position, would, I am sure, be appreciated.
