PHOENIX Governor Napolitano is considering taking steps
similar to a state of emergency declared by New Mexico's governor because of problems associated with the U-S-Mexico border.

New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson's declaration covered four New Mexico counties along the border and let him free up money to help law enforcement, to pay for a state Office of Homeland Security field office, to fence a Columubs-area livestock yard where cattle have been killed or stolen and other similar efforts.

The executive order made 750-thousand dollars immediately available to the four New Mexico border counties and Richardson pledged an additional million dollars.

Napolitano spokeswoman Jeanine L'Ecuyer (la-CURE' says Napolitano is considering options similar to Richardson's emergency declaration and may take action this week. L'Ecuyer declined to elaborate but she cautioned that the two states' laws are different.

Napolitano and Richardson are both Democrats.

In a related development, Republican U-S Representative Jeff Flake of Arizona says Richardson's declaration indicates the need for Congress to act on immigration legislation.
