Napolitano continues to call for guest worker program

Arizona Gov. Janet Napolitano Wednesday reiterated her support Wednesday for a guest worker program and beefed-up border security to help the state deal with illegal immigration from Mexico.

The governor also said she does not support construction of a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border, saying it would not be effective in stopping illegal crossings.

But Napolitano sidestepped questions at a press briefing regarding how to deal with the estimated 11 million to 15 million illegal immigrants already in the U .S. and how she stands on a controversial state proposal to severely punish employers who hire undocumented workers.

The Arizona Democrat is working on an immigration plan with Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman, a Republican. Napolitano has also voiced support for a guest worker plan put forward in Washington by U.S. Sens. John McCain, R-Ariz. and Edward Kennedy, D-Mass, and Arizona GOP Congressmen Jeff Flake and Jim Kolbe.

The McCain-Kennedy bill allows illegals already working in the U.S. to pay a $2,000 fine and apply for legal status. Conservative immigration hawks strongly oppose that or anything that smacks of amnesty,

Napolitano declined to say what she and Huntsman are looking at when it comes to illegals in the U.S. She also declined to comment on proposed state measures that would suspend or revoke the business licenses and charters of companies caught hiring illegal immigrants.

Business groups -- including the heavyweight Arizona Chamber of Commerce & Industry -- strongly oppose such measures, worrying small businesses will be put under for minor paperwork mistakes.

Backers of the bill, including State Rep. Russell Pearce, R-Mesa, counter that scofflaw employers who hire illegals are habitually breaking the law and get an unfair advantage over those who hire legal immigrants and U.S. citizens.

Napolitano declined to comment on the state sanctions bill. She did issue an executive order earlier this year telling state agencies to make sure they and their contractors are not employing illegals.

The governor has been critical of the Bush administration for not dedicating enough resources to the Mexican border, but did say recent upgrades in staffing were a step in the right direction.

Immigration is expected to be a top issue in next year's elections, including the governor's race.

This governor is confused. She doesn't seem to know what to be for on what day.

If you want to stop illegal immigration, you have to be for a fence and against a guest worker program. Instead she is against the fence and for a guest worker program.

Ironies and Opposites.

Everyone has their own variation of the same plan to end our nation.

Just more doubletalk from another Mexican agent posing as a US politican. That's what Nappy is good for. Talking out of both sides of her mouth is her forte. It should be apparent to even the biggest dimwit in AZ that she has no intention on dealing with this issue. She wouldn't want to offend all of the illegal aliens that will cast their illegal votes for her in 06 now would she?

She's a sad case of UNrepresentation of the people of Arizona.

I hope she is out of her position in 06, that way we might get someone worth while.

I'll pray she is outsted in 06. Arizona is a beautiful but fragile state with almost no water essential for its citizens and population to exist. There are so many more people already in Arizona in numbers beyond what this state can sustain, that it is Deadly Danger to have a Governor who doesn't understand that the survival of her citizens depends upon her controlling the population growth of Arizona.

I just wonder how people like her even get elected!
