English First Bill Vote Deferred Until February

Political maneuvering will make the English First ordinance an issue again next year. The vote to approve the ordinance was deferred Tuesday night until February.

Tuesday night's reading would have been third and final, if approved. Eric Crafton, who originally proposed the bill, proposed the deferral.

Opponents of the bill said the deferral was just a stalling technique.

"Votes they were counting on were not here tonight. They did not have the votes to get it through, so it's typical politics," Metro Councilman Adam Dread said. "It's silly legislation. It's unnecessary legislation. It sends a wrong message about Nashville and the people of Nashville that I honestly believe is the friendliest city in America, and this is just the wrong thing for us to be wasting this city's time on."

Many council members were not present at Tuesday's meeting, and some said Crafton would not have had the 21 votes hat he needed for approval.

Crafton hopes to use the next couple months for discussion and possibly to amend the bill.

Proponents called the deferral a victory since the vote could wait until there were enough votes to approve the ordinance.
