National Policy Institute Calls for Mass Deportation of Illegals


(McLean, VA) The National Policy Institute, a McLean, Virginia think tank, has called for the deportation of illegals in the U.S. A recently issued NPI paper has crunched the numbers and the Institute concludes that deporting illegal aliens would save Americans billions in annual taxes as well as increase the average income of native-born U.S. workers.

The Economics of Immigration Enforcement: Assessing the Costs and Benefits of Mass Deportation, written by statistical expert Edwin Rubenstein, presents startling data and analysis of the massive costs of illegal immigration to Americans and the enormous benefits that would result from deporting illegals.

The NPI paper is a direct response to a well publicized July 2005 study by The Center for American Progress, a leftwing think tank. The CenteræÅ*¯ paper claims that the price of deporting illegal aliens would be prohibitive, costing the government up to $230 billion over five years.

But the CenteræÅ*¯ paper basically ignores the total cost to American taxpayers of having anywhere from 8.5 to 20 million illegals in the U.S. who demand and receive benefits such as education, medical care, welfare and housing subsidies. NPIæÅ*¯ study finds that illegals receive more than $26 billion per year in federal services and additional billions from state and local governments.

Moreover, illegals have a negative impact on the jobs and income of American-born workers. The NPI paper cites a study by a Harvard professor, George Borjas, who estimates that every 10 percent increase in the labor force due to immigration results in a 3.5 percent decrease in native-born wages. The loss to American workers will be staggering when, as the U.S. Census forcasts, the illegal percentage of the labor force reaches 34 percent in 2025.

These are only a few of the facts and figures in NPIæÅ*¯ well-documented and comprehensive study. Rubenstein illustrates the clear advantage to Americans, as both taxpayers and workers, of deporting illegal aliens. The NPI study provides convincing evidence that the alien problem could be catastrophic and that deportation is a most reasonable option.

SYNOPSIS

In July 2005, the Center for American Progress published a report
assessing the costs of arresting, detaining, prosecuting, and
deporting illegal aliens. The study, Deporting the Undocumented: A
Cost Assessment, estimated that the total cost of mass deportation
would be between $206 and $230 billion over five years or an
average cost of between $41 and $46 billion annually over a five
year period. The following paper reviews the data on mass
deportation. In reassessing the cost, the following analysis
compares and contrasts what an amnesty would cost taxpayers in
terms of social services, lost wages, health care subsidies, and
educational expenditures. The author concludes that comparative
estimates demonstrate “no matter how high the costs of
deporting illegal aliens may seem, the costs of not deporting them
are larger still.�

According to new data from the Center for Immigration Studies, 8 million immigrants have entered the United States since 2000, nearly half of them illegally. The CIS's Steven Camarota, a staunch opponent of illegal immigration, claimed our policies are an open invitation to illegals. "We've yet to see any coherent policy about how to defend the borders, how to deny illegals from getting documentation. And all the evidence suggests this pace of illegal immigration has continued and maybe even accelerated." Camarota said illegals rely more on welfare, depress wages, and commit a disproportionate amount of crime. Playing devil's advocate, The Factor put forth the other side of the argument. "The Wall Street Journal editorial page is adamant that the United States absolutely needs all these people here to keep the economy humming." Camarota's response: "Illegal immigration dramatically increases the supply of workers with less than a high school education, so the big effect is at the bottom end of the labor market. We It doesn't make sense to increase job competition for this very poor group."

I WISH O'Reilly would publish the ENTIRE transcript. This was a good segment too.

Finally a 'think tank' that really thinks! I couldnt agree more. We would save a bundle by deporting all illegals. There is no reason why this couldnt be done. It may take a long time, but it is do-able. A little here and there until they are all gone is fine with me. Also, build a big fence and station soldiers along the border.
