National Review: Gingrich Should Bow Out

(NewsCore) - The conservative magazine National Review in an editorial published Monday called on Newt Gingrich to get out of the race for the Republican nomination to allow for a two-man contest between Mitt Romney and Rick Santorum.

"Gingrich's verbal and intellectual talents should make him a resource for any future Republican president," the publication's editors wrote. "But it would be a grave mistake for the party to make someone with such poor judgment and persistent unpopularity its presidential nominee."
They noted that Gingrich had nudged Santorum to leave the race when he was leading the former Pennsylvania senator in the polls after his upset victory in the South Carolina primary last month.

Gingrich, however, then lost the six following contests, while Santorum won three in Colorado, Missouri and Minnesota last week. Recent polls show Santorum rivaling Romney nationally and in some key primary states, while Gingrich is trailing.

"On his own arguments the proper course for him now is to endorse Santorum and exit," they wrote.

The editors also had critical words for Romney, calling his attacks on Santorum both "lame" and " patently insincere."

The editors advised Romney to focus on telling "conservatives what they will get out of a Romney presidency" rather than emphasizing his personal biography or attacking his rivals.
