KEARNEY — A Phoenix man and his nephew face drug distribution charges after a traffic stop Sunday on Interstate 80 for speeding and not having a front license plate turned up more than 200 pounds of marijuana.

Julio Flores-Elenes, 32, and Jayro Flores, 18, both of Phoenix, each face a single count of felony distribution of marijuana following a traffic stop Monday night on Interstate 80 near the Great Platte River Road Archway.

They are being held at the Buffalo County Detention Center on $50,000 cash bonds each. Flores-Elenes also is being held for Immigration Customs Enforcement officials.

They are scheduled to appear in court in May.

According to court records, at about 7:20 p.m. Sunday a Nebraska State Patrol trooper pulled Flores-Elenes over for speeding on I-80 five miles east of Kearney and for having no front license plate. After talking with Flores-Elenes and his nephew, Flores, the trooper became suspicious of possible criminal activity when the men’s stories didn’t match.

The trooper obtained consent to search the car and located 210 pounds of pot in a subwoofer speaker box in the trunk. The men were arrested.

If convicted, Flores-Elenes and Flores each face one to 20 years in prison.
