A controversial issue, which is intended to curb illegal immigration could go before Fremont voters.

Dodge County officials have verified more than 3,343 signatures of the more than 4,100 signatures turned in. Only 3,100 valid signatures are needed to force a special election on the measure.

If approved by voters, the measure would bar anyone in Fremont from hiring or renting to illegal immigrants.

City leaders have asked a judge to rule that Fremont lacks the authority to enact such a proposal, in part because federal law would pre-empt a city ordinance.

The council voted down a similar ordinance last summer

What federal law that you have to rent to illegals, thus aid and abet a criminal?

Hey, great strategy, unless I'm missing something. As long as all voters are legal voters. We all know the large majority of legal citizens are against illegal immigration, and would vote against it, unlike many of our warped legislators. It would probably be easy to get petition signatures. I wonder why this hasn't been tried more often?
