LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - Hispanic activists blasted Governor Dave Heineman for a measure that targets illegal immigrants, saying it is bigoted.

Ben Salazar said there is no evidence that illegal immigrants use state benefits such as welfare.

Heineman wants to require state agencies to verify any resident applying for state benefits is in the United States legally.

The governor's spokeswoman Jen Rae Hein says the bill is not bigoted because it addresses all illegal immigrants, not any individual race or ethnic group.

Who really care if they say we're bigoted or that we're racists. Ignore the name calling - that's all they have are accusations and threats. Just keep on keeping on and if we do - they'll be history and the complaining will fall on deaf ears. It's only because someone listens and reacts that they continue to babble. I believe that ILLEGAL outweighs every name they call us.

I agree....they protest way too much for being so "innocent". You would think if it was really un-true they would be encouraging it to prove us wrong.

LINCOLN, Neb. -- A protest on Monday at the Nebraska Capitol criticized Gov. Dave Heineman's attempt to tighten rules for distributing state benefits.

The group called Heineman's plan bigoted.

The governor said he wants a law requiring all state and local governments to verify the immigration status of anyone applying for benefits.

A 2006 law said Nebraska high school graduates could pay in-state tuition, even if they are illegal immigrants, but the governor said he supports repeal of the measure.

On Monday's holiday for Martin Luther King Jr., protestors say the bill is contrary to King's ideals.

"These are the future generations of children that were brought here by their parents, who have no control over those decisions but they are here nonetheless," said Latino Activist Ben Salazar. "The laws require them to be at school. But it's hypocritical to require those kids to be in school until the 12th grade and then tell them that's it -- no mas."

A spokeswoman for the governor said the proposal is not bigoted because it addresses all illegal immigrants -- not any specific race or ethnic group.
