Heineman Under Fire For Illegal Immigration Bill
Nebraska's leader is feeling heat over his plan to curb illegal immigration.
Hispanic activists are blasting Gov. Dave Heineman for a legislative proposal that targets illegal immigrants by saying it's bigoted.
Heineman wants to require state agencies to verify that all residents applying for state benefits are in the U.S. legally, but one activist says there's no evidence illegal immigrants use state benefits such as welfare.
The Governor's spokeswoman says the bill is not bigoted because it addresses all illegal immigrants, not just one individual race or ethnic group.

If illegals are not claiming welfare benefits then why such strong opposition to the legislation ? The fact that Salazar opposes such legislation virtually guarantees the illegal invaders are in fact receiving public assistance.
Same rational for requiring voter ID. If illegals are not voting in our elections then what harm will it create by requiring proper Identification before you participate in the political process?
Oh, and if you are an American Citizen and obtaining an ID is too much trouble for you then you probably should not be voting anyway. Voting is a privilege in which people have sacrificed their life to protect and promote. The least you should be required to do is present proper ID before being allowed to participate.Join our efforts to Secure America's Borders and End Illegal Immigration by Joining ALIPAC's E-Mail Alerts network (CLICK HERE)

Out of curiosity I googled Salazar's name to see who he was and found this article:
[quote]Publisher says Hispanic businesses growing faster than Census knows
By the Lincoln Journal Star

Ben Salazar says this number is probably too low: A Census Bureau report says the number of Hispanic-owned businesses in Nebraska grew by 37 percent, from 1,437 in 1997 to 1,966 in 2002, above the national rate of 31 percent.

It's also been established that some of these businesses are front's for drug operation money laundering. Let's face it, can a city support a Mexican restaurant on every corner, yet in many places they seem to be everywhere.

Illegal Immigration Fight Heats Up in Lincoln
Posted: Jan 22, 2008 08:56 PM PST
Lincoln, NE - The fight over illegal immigration finds Governor Dave Heineman denying charges of racism and bigotry. He's now considering a move that would find police in Nebraska working to enforce federal immigration laws. But critics argue it will lead to more racial profiling.
This comes in addition to the Governor's plan to stop illegal immigrants from getting state benefits.
There's an estimated 27,000 illegal immigrants in Nebraska. Now some state officials want to make sure those here illegally are not receiving state benefits, including education.
The Governor tells Action 3 News it's exactly what taxpayers want him to do. He says he doesn't believe it is a racially divisive issue.
State Senator Ray Aguilar from Grand Island is the only Hispanic in the legislature. He says he's disappointed with Heineman's latest move.
This isn't the first time Heineman has pushed the immigration issue and pushed it hard. Two years ago, when he was running for Governor, he argued against giving the children of illegal immigrants in-state college tuition. Action 3 News asked him if he felt he was pandering. He said, "No, not at all ... We're not playing any kind of card except fairness and equality."
Meantime, Senator Aguilar says he's going to try to stop the bill. He tells Action 3 News federal law already prohibits illegal immigrants from receiving state benefits, so he wants to see some numbers. He wants to find out just how many people here illegally are getting help from the state.

Sounds like it is time to get rid of the only Hispanic Senator in Neb. since he is not working to make sure taxpayer funds are protected against non-citizens recieving them.
