(New Haven-AP) _ New Haven's aldermen are expected to approve city issued identification cards for illegal immigrants.

The Board Of Aldermen is to vote today on the program that is being touted as the first of its kind program in the country.

New Haven wants to create a municipal identification card. Supporters say the ID would help assimilate immigrants and provide benefits to other residents who may not have official IDs.

The card would be recognized as official identification within city limits, allowing illegal immigrants to open bank accounts.

The card also would provide all holders access to city services, from parks to libraries, and function as a type of limited debit card.

There is opposition from groups opposing illegal immigration.

Ted Pechinski, a member of Southern Connecticut Citizens for Immigration Reform, says the ID cards will encourage more illegals to come to New Haven.

Here comes the mark of the beast.

And yet those same people are opposed to developing an ID that would identify legal americans so that we could stop illegal immigration.

All we need in this country to fix this problem, is a tamper proof social security card, with the holders fingerprints and picture on it. Instead this administration wants to issue several differnet kinds of I.D. to cost more money and confusion.

(New Haven-WTNH) _ New Haven's aldermen voted 25-1 in favor of a city issued identification card for illegal immigrants.

Your picture, your name and vital statistics. The new ID card is quite simple, but so very significant. New Haven is the first place in the nation where an illegal immigrant can get a legal identification card. The card will provide access to all public services, but more importantly will allow people to open bank accounts.

It is an idea that is not without detractors. Barbara Keidel's parents immigrated to this country legally.

"I feel that the people that break our laws, that come over here illegally, are taking from us and exploiting us as citizens," said Barbara.

But the voices of the opponents were drowned out by the passion and purpose of other protestors on the steps of City Hall. It was a show of strength for those who live in the shadows of our society. They say they are here because they want to work, because they have no choice and they deserve to be recognized. It is estimated that between 10 to 15-thousand undocumented workers live in New Haven.

"The city's not trying to set its own foreign policy here, what's happening is we're dealing with a failing national immigration policy," said Mayor DeStefano, who has led the charge for the ID card.

Inside the aldermen chambers, a parade of politicians rose to speak in favor of the cards.

"They live in the city, they work in the city, they want to stay in the city," said Alderwoman Migadlia Castro.

When it passed, it was greeted with wild enthusiasm and cheers of 'si, se pueda.' Yes, we can.

The cards will be issued beginning next month. It will cost $10 for adults and $5 for children.

Wow, 25 for and only 1 against! IMHO, this is totally unacceptable.

How long will it be before they start making counterfeit cards? Why should they pay for them? If there is any justice all of the illegals within a thousand miles will flood into the city and take advantage of this offer.

I have a plan for New Haven! I think you will like it! I just watched the news coverage about this on Fox! I dont think the huge Hazleton event got coverage like this on Fox!

A guest on MSNBC (sorry I didn't get his name and can't do a proper attribution) just pointed out that when cities such as Hazelton, Pa, etc. took steps to pass ordinances affecting illegal immigration the illegals said cities had no business meddling in immigration issues because it is exclusively the province of ICE. But when New Haven meddles by providing i.d. cards, that's not meddling.

Illegals will able to create new identities for these cards and then go in and apply for new ones when they can get away with it. With the cards being easy to get, there will be multiple applications for welfare coming from the same person.
