New Haven (WTNH) _ For the second time in a little over a week, vandals have struck at a Vietnam war memorial and this time the damage is even harder to clean up.

Seeing the black spray paint on the memorial is painful to the veterans who went down to Long Wharf Saturday. For some reason, vandals have targeted the Vietnam War Memorial and the stone "V" two times in the last week. Once again, the vandals are writing "MS-13," which stands for a violent street gang.

"This is a sad scene for me to see that this is happening now," said a veteran who only wished to be identified as Jimmy V.

For the second time in a week vandals marked up the Vietnam War memorial at Long Wharf in New Haven. This time they did it by spray painting over the names of those who fought and died in the Vietnam War. A man who only wished to be identified as Jimmy V, is one of those Vietnam veterans.

"It's a kick in the gut to all Vietnam veterans. Again our brothers will serve as a reminder not only to a war but to the way society is now with no respect this has to stop," Jimmy V said.

Jimmy V says it is the third time vandals defaced the memorials at the park. He says he cleaned white pray paint off the memorials stone "V" in early December.

Last week, the vandals used bright orange spray paint to write "MS-13". That stands for a violent street gang with roots in El Salvador. According to the feds, they're involved in drug trafficking, weapons trafficking, even human trafficking!

"Are you concerned that it's MS-13 and what they stand for?"
"No, I'm not too worried about thugs," Jimmy V said.

That said, Jimmy V wants whoever is responsible to knock it off.

Police say there's no evidence at this point that MS-13 is established in New Haven, but they're looking into it. The city is now also considering installing cameras at the memorial.

"You don't like to have a camera out here where people come and pay respects but certainly you don't want to have something like this to happen to something so meaningful," New Haven Chief Administrative Officer, Rob Smuts, said.

The Parks Department will be out at Long Wharf to clean the memorial up again. The hope is a camera will not only help catch those responsible, but will also serve as a deterrent.
