New Memphis office will seek fugitive immigrants

Shelby County

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement will open a Memphis office aimed at catching immigrants who have been ordered deported or have broken other laws.

Fugitive Operations agents can arrest immigrants anywhere in the U.S. The Memphis office will focus on fugitives in Tennessee, Mississippi, Alabama, Arkansas and Louisiana.

Memphis was selected after a review of fugitive immigrants' last-known addresses showed a concentration in areas within driving range of Memphis, said Philip Miller, an assistant director of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement's New Orleans Field Office.

The Fugitive Operations office concentrates on catching immigrants who have ignored or failed to comply with a deportation order or have broken other laws. The teams do not respond to tips from the public about suspected illegal immigrants.

There are 73 fugitive operations offices in the U.S.
