    The mayor of Morristown said Wednesday that he has signed an agreement with the Department of Homeland Security that would pave the way for deputizing the town’s police officers as immigration agents.

    But while the step is significant, Mayor Donald Cresitello added that it is not yet a done deal.

    Cresitello, whose proposal to implement the federal program, known as 287G, sparked protests by immigration advocacy groups from around the state two years ago, said Homeland Security plans to send him a modified agreement.

    The mayor also said he plans to present the final, amended agreement to the Town Council for its approval.

    Morristown mayor closer to deputizing cops as immigration agents

    MORRISTOWN — A major sticking point in the town’s effort to participate in a federal program that allows local police to enforce immigration rules has been eliminated.



    Changes in the federal law, known as 287G, mean the town would no longer need to use the county jail to house any illegal immigrants arrested as a result of the program. The county had rejected the town’s efforts to use its facility to participate in the program.


    Mayor Donald Cresitello said today that he is still interested in having the town’s officers deputized to enforce immigration laws under the Homeland Security program, which is currently under review by the federal government.
