NJ: Murder Warrant Issued for Illegal In Death Of Infant

Update: Murder warrant issued in death of Vineland infant

    Staff Writer

VINELAND — Police made a grisly discovery in the basement of a Center City home: the body of an infant who apparently was beaten to death.

A homicide investigation is ongoing, and a search is under way at this hour for the man whom police believe may have killed the baby girl Tuesday afternoon, authorities say. An arrest warrant has been issued.

The 3-month-old child, Kimberly Rivas, was reported missing last night when her mother came home from work, Police Chief Timothy Codispoti says. Police did not immediately release the mother’s name.

Police went to the woman’s apartment at 16 S. Fourth Street and found signs of foul play, the chief says.

They found the dead child in the basement about 11 p.m.

An autopsy is being performed, and Codispoti says officers believe it will show the child was beaten to death.

“Right now we’re looking for the boyfriend of the victim’s mother, who has fled,” Codispoti said.

The chief identified the suspect as Randy Lopez-Rivas, 18, who immigrated to the United States illegally from Guatemala. He is Rivas’ boyfriend but is not the baby’s father, Codispoti says.Lopez-Rivas is described as 5 feet 8 inches and 165 pounds. He has a thin build and curly hair.

An arrest warrant issued this morning charges Lopez-Rivas with murder.

Authorities say he has been arrested twice before, including on a burglary charge. Police have his photo and fingerprints on file.

Codispoti says investigators believe Lopez-Rivas has fled the area.

“We’re trying to do everything we can to catch this guy,” the chief said.

Codispoti says police don’t yet know the motive for the slaying. He said he expects the autopsy, which was under way this morning, will show the baby was beaten to death Tuesday afternoon.

Jerk Um, no, I don't know that the state/county will prosecute this piece of trash. He's an illegal, and if Bush hears about it, chances are he'd give him the key to the city and throw the victim's family in jail. (And yes, basically the same thing is happening with border patrol agents vs. illegals and the side Bush supports.)

Chances are this guy will be deported, where he'll just come back after five minutes, or put in jail for a little time and released. In other words, basically nothing will happen to him.

We need a fund to remove all the idiots, liberals, and assorted bleeding hearts from the "justice system" and replace them with people who actually enforce the law and punish criminals.

cinquecaps Hey Jerk, You know the county/State will prosecute this person, and I think you are teasing us a little. Perhaps if the police had no suspects, we could have started a reward fund for information leading to arrest and prosecution.

Perhaps someday we will learn if this baby killer had harmed an animal in the past. Think of the reward for Justice as a way of getting, at the worst, a dog killer, off the streets before they could become baby killers.

Anabelle There should be a fund to send these people back to Guatemala and Mexico when they are arrested for burglary in the first place.

Jerk What? There's no fund started to collect money to help prosecute a baby killer like there is for the dog?

    Go figure.

Well you obviously had the illegal in your custody twice before and you let him go. Does your bleeding heart feel good this morning?
A baby is dead and he has left the country. We have lunatics with a death wish in control of our cities, counties, states and country.

I just sent a letter to Menendez & Lautenberg telling them that this child would be alive if immirgration laws were upheld in New Jersey.

Too little, too late. You caused the death of this child by letting the illegal alien go not once but twice.

There's a special place in hell for anyone who harms a child. This guy certainly deserves it.

Why so you can let him go again.

These Bastards should not be in law enforcement, I hope who ever let this jerk go can not live with him self, although I'm sure thats asking to much.

Our state and local government is really begining to tick me off big time!!

Police looking for man they believe killed his girlfriend's baby
    By GEOFF MULVIHILL
    Associated Press Writer

    April 25, 2007, 12:04 PM EDT
MOUNT LAUREL, N.J. -- Vineland police on Wednesday were trying to track down a Guatemalan man they believe beat to death his girlfriend's three-month old daughter, then took a bus out of town.

The baby was discovered Tuesday night stuffed in a garbage bag among some boxes behind a clothes washer in the house where Randy Lopez-Rivas, an illegal immigrant, was living with the child's mother.

Police say Lopez-Rivas got on a Philadelphia-bound bus Tuesday evening. But they do not know whether the 18-year-old got off on a stop along the way or perhaps caught another bus after he had arrived, said Cumberland County Prosecutor Ronald Casella.

Casella said baby's 21-year-old mother, Guillermina Matias-Lopez, left home at 4:45 a.m. Tuesday to go to work.

She left the girl, a few days shy of three months old, with Lopez-Rivas, who was not the baby's father. Usually, Lopez-Rivas drops the baby off with a neighbor who takes care of her during the day.

But Tuesday afternoon, he showed up at the sitter's house alone and asked for a ride to the bus station.

Casella said investigators are trying to figure out whether that raised any alarms with the sitter and whether she asked about the baby's whereabouts.

When Matias-Lopez arrived at the baby-sitter's house around 7:45 p.m., she was alarmed that her child was not there.

She could not find the infant at home, either.

At 11 p.m., after more than two hours of searching, police found the baby behind the clothes washer.

Authorities believed the baby, who had a thick thatch of black hair, was beaten to death. An autopsy was being conducted Wednesday morning.

In an arrest warrant issued Wednesday, he was charged with murder.

They don't know why Lopez-Rivas, a wiry 5-foot-8 man with a wisp of a mustache, would have struck the baby. He has previously been arrested on charges of burglary and theft.

Casella said Lopez-Rivas may have been heading to Boston where he has relatives or may be trying he leave the country.

BREAKING NEWS: Guatemalan charged with beating 3-year-old to death in South Jersey
By GEOFF MULVIHILL , Associated Press Writer

MOUNT LAUREL (AP) - A teenage day laborer from Guatemala was charged Wednesday with beating to death his girlfriend's 3-month-old daughter.
New Jersey Transit Police arrested Randy Lopez-Rivas Wednesday afternoon as he was walking near the Walter Rand Transportation Center in Camden, police said. He was charged with murder.
Lopez-Rivas had disappeared from his Vineland apartment before his girlfriend, Guillermina Matias-Lopez came home to work and realized her baby was missing.
The baby was found later in a garbage bag behind a clothes washer in the basement of the house where the couple was renting an apartment.
Cumberland County Prosecutor Ronald Casella said baby's 21-year-old mother, Guillermina Matias-Lopez, left home at 4:45 a.m. Tuesday to go to work.
She left the girl, Kimberly Lopez-Rivas, with Lopez-Rivas, who was not the baby's father.
Casella said Lopez-Rivas turned up alone at the nearby home of a woman who often took care of the infant and asked for a ride to the bus station, where he hopped onto a Philadelphia-bound bus. Authorities wondered if he would try to leave the country, or perhaps head to Boston, where he has relatives.
Investigators were trying to figure out whether that raised any alarms with the sitter and whether she asked about the baby's whereabouts, Casella said.
When Matias-Lopez arrived at the baby-sitter's house around 7:45 p.m., she was alarmed that her child was not there, Casella said.
She could not find the infant at home, either.
At 11 p.m., after more than two hours of searching, police found the baby behind the washing machine.
Authorities believed the baby, who had a thick thatch of black hair, was beaten to death. An autopsy was being conducted Wednesday.
In an arrest warrant issued Wednesday, he was charged with murder.
They don't know why Lopez-Rivas, a wiry 5-foot-8 man with a wisp of a mustache, would have struck the baby. He has previously been arrested on charges of burglary and theft.
