BRIDGETON - A North Pearl Street man was flown to a Camden hospital after his roommate stabbed him twice Wednesday night following an alcohol-fueled argument, police said.

Elpidio Fernandez, 30, was stabbed in the left side of his neck and his back, according to police. He was airlifted to Cooper University Hospital for treatment of what police described as non-life-threatening injuries.

The stabbing occurred inside 296 N. Pearl St., where the victim and suspect reside, according to Bridgeton Police Detective Lt. Michael Gaimari.

Police dispatched to the 200 block of North Pearl Street around 10:50 p.m. Wednesday found the suspect holding Fernandez outside in a non-aggressive manner, a few homes south of their own residence.

A knife police believe was used in the stabbing was recovered, according to Gaimari.

Santiago C. Calletano, 23, was charged with aggravated assault, unlawful possession of a weapon and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose. He also was served a failure to appear warrant.

A suspected illegal immigrant, Calletano was lodged in the county jail without bail on a detainer issued by Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Bail on the stabbing-related charges was set at $50,000. The warrant called for $350 bail.
