Reno man gets five months jail time served for recruiting illegal immigrants for work

A 44-year-old accused illegal immigrant from Costa Rica was sentenced this week to time spent in jail after pleading guilty to recruiting another illegal immigrant to work for a Reno company and providing the man fake documents.

Luis Enrique Valverde now faces deportation after Reno U. S. District Judge Larry R. Hicks on Wednesday ordered his punishment be the five months he has already spent in Washoe County Jail after his August indictment. He pleaded guilty to one count of encouraging and inducing an illegal immigrant to reside in the United States/aiding and abetting.

Valverde approached a Guatemalan immigrant in 2004 while the man was dining at a Reno Burger King. He told the man — who had been in the country illegally since 2000 — that he would help him get a job at Vital Systems Corp., where Valverde was employed as a high level manager. The company is a Reno electronics manufacturing and assembly corporation. Officials there could not be reached for comment.

Valverde gave the man fake documents and he was hired. The man continued to work at the company until April, when Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents served a search warrant on the business looking for illegal immigrant workers.

Valverde was terminated from the company in December 2008. According to court records, during an ICE review of employees, agents determined 31 of 81 employees were illegal immigrants.

In another charge that federal prosecutors dropped, authorities say Valverde recruited an illegal immigrant from Mexico whom he met at church to work for the company. She was hired in 2006 with Valverde’s help and was laid off last year due to the economy.

No other arrests have been made in the case.

Well, that should make aiders and abetters quiver in fear! Our judicial system needs their water supply checked.
