NYC Mayor Says U.S. Depends on Immigrants
    By KIMBERLY HEFLING
    Associated Press Writer

PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- The economy of the country's largest city and the entire nation would collapse if illegal immigrants were deported en masse, New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg told a Senate committee hearing Wednesday.

New York City is home to more than 3 million immigrants, and a half-million of them came to this country illegally, Bloomberg testified.

"Although they broke the law by illegally crossing our borders ... our city's economy would be a shell of itself had they not, and it would collapse if they were deported," he said. "The same holds true for the nation."

The hearing, led by Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Arlen Specter, R-Pa., in Philadelphia, was one of several held nationwide as congressional Republicans take to the road to discuss overhauling immigration laws.

House GOP leaders called for the hearings last month in a blow to President Bush's ambitious election-year plan that includes a guest worker program and path to citizenship for millions in this country illegally.

At a House subcommittee meeting at a Border Patrol station in San Diego, Republicans tried to focus on the potential for terrorists to enter the United States through Mexico.

"Immigration reform must be national security reform," said Rep. Ed Royce, the subcommittee chairman.

Democrats at the hearing sought to portray GOP immigration and border policies as failures.

"This is a charade," said Rep. Bob Filner, whose district includes the patrol station. "It's a cover-up for the fact that they can't produce a bill and they can't secure our borders."

Specter and fellow senators are trying to build support for a Senate bill that would allow a majority of the illegal immigrants to eventually become legal permanent residents and citizens after paying at least $3,250 in fines, fees and back taxes and learning English.

The competing bill passed by the House focuses on enforcement and has no provision for illegal immigrants or future guest workers.

President Bush, visiting a Dunkin' Donuts shop in Alexandria, Va., promoted his view that immigration legislation should provide some means for illegal immigrants who have been in the U.S. for a long time to stay.

"We cannot kick people out who have been here for awhile," Bush said, adding that they should be "treated with respect and dignity."

At the hearing in Philadelphia, a Pennsylvania mayor who has pushed for local ordinances cracking down on illegal immigrants asked for federal government assistance.

"We must dig deep into the city's accounts to pay for illegal immigrants, while illegal immigrants do not pay their fair share of taxes, either to the city, the county, the state or the country," said Louis J. Barletta, the mayor of Hazelton.

The panel that met in San Diego was set to meet again Friday in the border city of Laredo, Texas.

Why not? The longer they have been here illegally is the longer they have been committing a crime. So why is it, if I owe the IRS a few dollars, they get it it with interest and penalties added. Why not just say it's been a long time so we can't charge you let's just forget about it?
We are NOT a nation of immigrants!

EISENHOWER deported illegals why can't Bush! If the illegals have been here a long time, that means they have been breaking the law for a long time! They should arrest the heads of the corporations for hiring illegals big and small and fine them. Maybe we could recoup the payroll taxes(tax evasion) they have not paid.

Are the business owners above the law? I think not! The American people are fed up with the lies and deception!

Border security now and immigration laws enforced is the mantra!

Good point. According to Bloomberg, not only the economy of NYC but the entire nation would collapse without illegal immigration. What a crock!!!! I have yet to see any hard facts that support the 'economic collapse' theory.
If the economy of the entire nation depends on 12-20 million illegal aliens, we are in big trouble.
No doubt that the economy of Mexico would collapse.

Mayor Bloomberg, you are such an idiot. I cannot believe a nation that won two world wars, survived a depression, cured polio, put men on the moon, identified the human genome, helped create the industrial revolution, and fostered the machine age, atomic age, jet age, space age, computer age, digital age, and the information age cannot survive without the employment of unskilled, uneducated, mostly illiterate (not only in English, but in Spanish as well) illegal aliens. Well thanks to morons like you we must be in the propaganda age. Maybe billionaires like you and your ilk could not survive without your private jets, mansions and Dom Perignon, bought from the profits obtained through the exploitation of not only illegal labor but by the lowering of all workers wages. Too bad we aren't fully into the genetic engineering age, so someone can insert a truth and conscience gene into your lame brain.

Another thing that Bloomberg fails to realize is that the illegal population could never survive without being subsidized with entitlements paid for by American taxpayers.
It is actually the American taxpayer that makes it possible for these greedy politicians and business to exploit the system.
Someone should explain to this dumb mayor that Americans are the real driving force behind the economy.

Is this not a violation of the law? Did the President not just say he is willingly ignoring the law. The current law calls for illegal aliens to be deported and he is refusing.

Is this not a high crime???

Since when has Bush ever cared about obeying the law? He thinks the Constiution is a G-- D--- piece of paper. If he didn't say it directly, he proves it in every statement he makes and every action he takes. He doesn't care about laws or the American people, his only concern is that the rich get richer and the middle class be destroyed and driven down into third world wage levels.
