Illegal's case turned over to feds, deportation likely

A charge of petty theft filed here against a 60-year-old Polish woman in the United States illegally was dropped.

"The charge was dismissed against (Irena) Nowak," said Capt. Randy LePage of the Cambridge Police Department. "That was because she was turned over to the custody of ICE."

The Immigration and Customs Enforcement is a federal law enforcement agency under the United States Department of Homeland Security. Duties include identification and investigation of threats to the security of America's borders, economy and infrastructure.

"She was turned over for the purpose of processing the deportation back to Poland," LePage said.

The charge was a misdemeanor of the first degree.

Nowak entered the Cambridge Wal-Mart at about 1:30 p.m. Aug. 19, police said. She distracted the checkout clerk, reached over and removed cash from the register. Store security personnel followed her and, upon realizing this, Nowak threw a handful of cash at the cashier. The total was found to be four times as much as was missing from the drawer.

Store personnel reportedly detained her until the arrival of officers.

Nowak was found to be wanted in Massachusetts and Rhode Island. Officials there refused to extradite her, however.

Officers later learned through the assistance of the daughter of a police detective that Nowak had been featured on the TV series "America's Most Wanted" and had been in America illegally for 25 years. Federal agents were contacted.

A female with Nowak was questioned and released. She may have been Wallentina Knapek, also wanted by authorities.

Through further online research police learned that Nowak and Knapek were using not only the identity of each other but sharing as many as 44 aliases and nearly a dozen different Social Security numbers.
