Old Glory Made In China No More?
Old Glory Made In China No More?
Heavy Demand For Stars And Stripes
July 15, 2008
WASHINGTON -- For one California lawmaker, made in China doesn't fly when it comes to the American flag.
In the aftermath of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, American manufacturers couldn't keep up with demand and Chinese-made flags popped up in yards across the country.
But lawmakers are trying to strip the made-in-China label off the Stars and Stripes flown on federal property.
Rep. Bob Filner, R-Calif., came up with a nonbinding "sense of Congress" resolution that cleared the House, which pushes for flags with American roots on federal land.
But Congress can't force the government to buy American-made flags because of trade agreements, so the resolution has no real sway.
Filner can take solace that he won't be confronted with foreign-made flags at work. Only U.S.-made flags are flown at the Capitol.
