The Mexican consulates have the instruction to defend "strongly and energetically" the rights of his countrymen, in light of the continuous raids in workplaces and local governments that seek to apply immigration laws, the president of Mexico Felipe Calderon said yesterday.

The leader added that his government is respectful of the laws of other countries but that "to watch over the rights of the Mexican community is ours responsibility".

Cases in which families are separated when immigration agents deports parents or mothers are especially worrying, he said.

"We are aware of the cases of families being separated", the Mexican president said. "Each time we receive children and separated from his parents at the border, we will be in charge of them".
