Opposition grows to immigration prison in Arizona

There is opposition arising to a proposed 1,500-inmate federal immigration prison being considered for southern Arizona on the Tohono O’odham Indian reservation.

The American Civil Liberties Union of Arizona has written U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano opposing the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention center near the Arizona border with Mexico. The ACLU notes federal police and other law enforcement already detain about 3,000 illegal immigrants on a given day. Many of those are undocumented immigrants from Mexico awaiting deportation from the U.S.

The proposed prison initially would house 750 illegal immigrants awaiting deportation or prosecution, but the facility could be expanded to 1,500 prisoners.

The ACLU says ICE is on track to detain more than 440,000 immigrants in 200, up from 311,000 in 2007. The group favors more lenient immigration policies and is part of legal efforts aimed at Maricopa County Sheriff Joe’s Arpaio’s crime and immigration sweeps.

The civil libertarian group also is petitioning the U.S. Department of Defense to change a new training manual. The ACLU is upset that a Pentagon manual related to homeland security, emergency preparedness and terrorism lists political and other protests as possibly being linked to terrorism.

Of course ACLU public enemy number one would object.
I support enforcement and see its lack as bad for the 3rd World as well. Remittances are now mostly spent on consumption not production assets. Join our efforts to Secure America's Borders and End Illegal Immigration by Joining ALIPAC's E-Mail Alerts network (CLICK HERE)

Read this story three times and still don't see a reasonable explanation as to why the ACLU is complaining.

You're right, there is no real reason for their whining. However, I guess this could be considered a catch all:

The group favors more lenient immigration policies

To my knowledge, the ACLU was founded pre-World War II to defend communists. Seems to me they have gotten out of hand but they still have enough money coming in to try and topple this country. Someone is paying their way.

As other have said, "Follow The Money".

Re: Opposition grows to immigration prison in Arizona

Many of those are undocumented immigrants from Mexico awaiting deportation from the U.S.
Can anyone explain to me how a foreigner awaiting deportation is an "immigrant" of any type? Websters Dictionary defines an immigrant as a foreigner who has "settled" here. Yet the press including the Associated Press insists on calling apprehended illegal aliens awaiting deportation "immigrants".

Or maybe I should ask, what is the ulterior motive of the press in calling them "immigrants"?
