Illegal Alien Population at Oregon State Penitentiary Tops 1,100
    December 9, 2008

For the first time in the history of the Oregon Department of Corrections (OR DOC) the number of inmates with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) holds exceeded 1,100 inmates last month. There are now 1,109 inmates in the State prison system who will be turned over to ICE once they have served their prison terms The 1,109 criminal alien prisoners reported in the state system are in addition to the criminal alien prisoners held in county, city and federal prisons in Oregon.

Oregonians for Immigration Reform (OFIR) President Jim Ludwick stated, “These numbers are outrageous. Two years ago there were only 807 inmates in the State Penitentiary system with ICE holds. That is a 20 percent increase in just two years.â€

One illegal alien inmate, Gustavo Mercado-Murillo, was sentenced in June of this year to 75 years in prison for sexually torturing 5 children. As Mercado is 31 years old now, if he serves only 40 years, just his incarceration costs alone will be over $1.2 million. Mercado also happens to be on kidney dialysis at a cost of $6,000 per week or more than $300,000 per year. If he were to live for 40 more years it would cost taxpayers an additional $12 million for his dialysis treatment. This is just one illegal alien criminal.
These "unique circumstances" probably double the economic impact to our society---above what the statistics would indicate. Since when did we accept responsibility for the medical crises of foreign citizens? Two centuries ago they would have passed due to natural causes; now the taxpayers obviously are on the hook from cradle to the grave. Is it any wonder our insurance rates have gone so high?
