Other states consider Arizona law
Immigration enforcement bills have been introduced in 17 states.
Advocacy groups that favor Arizona's immigration enforcement law have filed similar measures in 17 states.
"Our national network of activists have been working overtime trying to help the state of Arizona and the brave Arizonans who have passed this bill," said William Gheen, who heads Americans for Legal Immigration PAC. The group argues that reduced immigration will help the U.S. thrive.
The activists contend that most Americans want local police to have the authority to enforce federal immigration laws. Nevada, Indiana, Pennsylvania, Maryland, and South Carolina are among the states considering such legislation.
Conservative groups agree with immigrant rights activists that Congress and the Obama administration need to change their immigration policies, but they argue that states should have the right to defend themselves in the interim.
Gheen's national group has worked closely with state-level advocates in the past on laws that prevent illegal immigrants from getting driver's licenses or in-state college tuition rates.
