The Arizona Republic

Here are last week's developments related to Arizona's new immigration law, known as Senate Bill 1070.

The law makes it a state crime to be in the country illegally. It states that an officer engaged in a lawful stop, detention or arrest shall, when practicable, ask about a person's legal status when reasonable suspicion exists that the person is in the U.S. illegally.

Cities that have approved boycotts of Arizona:

No new municipal boycotts.

Other public bodies that announced Arizona boycotts:

• The San Francisco Unified School District board on June 22 decided to ban all district travel to Arizona.

Other actions for and against:

• The Hemet, Calif., City Council on June 22 endorsed Arizona's law.

• The Durham (N.C.) City Council on June 21 passed a resolution 6-1 urging the federal government to reform immigration laws and subjecting any official Arizona trips to a case-by-case review by the city council. Mayor Bill Bell likened Arizona's new law to "a step into the past to the era of segregation."

• The San Antonio City Council on June 24 approved a resolution condemning the law and urging Texas not to adopt a similar one.

• More than 500 Arizonans plan to gather at 8 a.m. today at the Heard Museum, 2301 N. Central Ave., to spell out the words "SOS Congress" for a photograph to be taken from 12 stories above, in an attempt to urge Congress to take action on immigration reform.
