2 Immigrants Hit On Border Highway In A Week

EL PASO, Texas -- After two undocumented immigrants were hit on the Border Highway this week, some are questioning the safety on motorists on the stretch of road.

"Basically, sometimes you see kids with bicycles running up and down which is dangerous," said Christine Johnson, an area resident.

Johnson has lived just yards from the Border Highway for years, and in that time she has seen many people walking along the highway just inches from the speeding traffic, some of them most likely undocumented immigrants.

Thursday night an immigrant was hit by a car on the Border Highway near Yarbrough as they attempted to cross. It makes the second time someone was hit in less than a week. Despite that, U.S. Border Patrol claims they are doing their job.

“These types of incidents are isolated, the last 15 to 20 years we haven't seen many of these incidents, but we are of course concerned with safety," said Armiro Cordero, a Border Patrol spokesman.

Cordero said the border fence is doing its job and so are agents, but Johnson thinks there should be some warning.
