PA: Nine suspected illegal immigrants detained in Bethlehem

    April 2, 2007 - 11:06 AM EDT
Nine suspected illegal immigrants detained in Bethlehem
Bethlehem police and Northampton County prosecutors picked up 9 men suspected of being illegal immigrants this morning.

Eight men from Bolivia and one man from El Salvador were stopped around 8 a.m. in a vehicle in a parking lot in the 400 block of Main Street, said Bethlehem police Deputy Commissioner Stuart Bedics.

The men were detained by police and are suspected as being illegal immigrants, Bedics said. Around 10:30 a.m., police were still interviewing the men.

Police said they are still trying to determine where the men were going, Bedics said.

Northampton County District Attorney John Morganelli could not be immediately reached for comment this morning.

DA says two of nine detained for illegal immigration have criminal records
    Posted by Express-Times staff April 03, 2007 15:59PM

Two of the nine men arrested Monday in Bethlehem on illegal immigration charges have criminal records, Northampton County District Attorney John Morganelli said during a news conference today.

Morganelli said one had an outstanding fugitive warrant and another had drug charges in California. The district attorney expressed his disappointment with what he said was a lack of cooperation provided locally by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials. Morganelli has lodged complaints on the matter with U.S. Rep. Charlie Dent and U.S. Attorney Patrick Meehan.

The illegal immigrants -- seven from Bolivia, one from El Salvador and one from Guatemala -- were detained as they arrived for work at Hotel Bethlehem, where they were working for a subcontractor putting up drywall at the hotel.

I can see the so called "Bank of Opportunity" or as we like to refer to them as "Bank of Amnesty" running to their public relations firms.
