IMPERIAL BEACH, Calif. -- Part of Friendship Park, where a fence separates park-goers on both sides of the US-Mexico border, was closed to visitors after people threw rocks at American officials from the Mexican side Friday, US Customs and Border Protection said.

"Friday night, at around 5:45 pm, San Diego Sector Chief Patrol Agent Rodney Scott was touring an area just north of the US-Mexico border wall in Imperial Beach. During the tour, rocks were thrown from unknown persons who were south of the border," CBP spokesman Ralph DeSio said.

DeSio said that while no one was injured, "at least one rock hit a portable light on the north side of the border."

"Due to unrest in this location, the area known as Friendship Circle has been closed to visitors until further notice," the official said.


The park closure is the latest development in rising tensions at the border.

Central American migrants travelling in a caravan have been arriving in Tijuana with plans to seek asylum in the US. In the meantime, they've camped in public spaces in Mexico, where they've been greeted by some residents who are unhappy with them being there.

IMPERIAL BEACH, Calif. (KGTV) — The U.S. Customs and Border Protection Commissioner, Kevin McAleenan, was nearly clobbered with a large rock Friday night.

According to CBP, McAleenan was taking a tour of the border defenses added to the wall along Friendship Park. He went to speak with people through the wall when someone threw a large rock from the other side and barely missed the commissioner.

President Trump said earlier this month, that any rock and stone throwing would be considered firearms.

CBP did not say what happened after the rock missed the commissioner, but said McAleenan took the rock with him.

The incident comes the same day border officials released video of men climbing the U.S.-Mexico border fence and damaging recently installed concertina wire.

Construction crews have been working throughout the week to reinforce fencing and other anti-climbing measures in an area behind La Americas Premium Outlets. Officials say that work began in June to replace 14 miles of aging fencing and not related to the arrival of a caravan of migrants from Central America.

Friendship Park is a half-acre binational park located along the United States-Mexico border in the San Diego–Tijuana region.^[1][2]
Located within the larger Border Field State Park in California's San Diego county, the park includes the border fence dividing the two countries where residents of both countries can meet in person.^[3]
On the U.S. side, the park used to be part of the Monument Mesa picnic area but is now wholly located on federal property under the Department of Homeland Security^[4] and is heavily monitored by U.S. Border Patrols 24 hours a day.^[5]

They are on the Mexico side of the border and it doesn't say anyone in the U.S. is paying for them.
