Passaic, NJ Editor: ICE raids like Hitler and Stalin

The editors of this Passaic, NJ (a self-declared sanctuary city for illegal aliens) are using the hate words of smear to compare ICE law enforcement actions in Passaic as "hitler-like and reminiscent of actions by Stalin. Gee, sounds like the smear tactics and code words of hate towards ICE that LA RAZA, the ADL and SPLC are using.....

Editorial: In Passaic, issues of immigration and trust
By Herald News, Herald News | 03/12/08 02:13 AM

Federal ICE raids put local police in difficult situation

A late night knock on the door. Troopers in black boots, busting in on a home. The look of horror in children's eyes. The scene is all too reminiscent of any number of films, real and fictional, based on the humilities suffered during the Holocaust, the misdeeds of Stalinist Russia, or the purges carried out by Chilean strongman Augusto Pinochet.

Except in this case the scenario didn't play out in any of those chapters from world history. It played out here in Passaic County, in the early morning hours of Feb. 19. The troopers involved were officers of the federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement. They were accompanied by members of the Passaic Police Department. It is a scene being played out with greater frequency around the country.

And it is a sad testament to the times in which we all live.

Turns out one of the raids in Passaic, on the home of Oswaldo Martinez, was targeted at another illegal immigrant, his father, who was wanted on a DWI violation, a crime New Jersey has cited as cause for ICE notification. The problem, as is the case in too many of these raids, is that the person originally sought was not present, so ICE officers arrested another who was, Martinez, who records revealed faced a 10-year-old outstanding deportation order.

That's not the sort of law enforcement and system of justice upon which this nation has long relied.

Particularly troubling is the way the raid was conducted, given that last fall the City Council passed a resolution declaring Passaic a "safe haven" for immigrants. Though nonbinding, it means that city officers and social service agencies will not, as a matter of course, ask anyone about their immigration status.

That covenant of trust was shattered by ICE officers and their willing Passaic Police Department escorts. And the episode reminds us, painfully, of a greater debate raging in this country regarding the roughly 12 million undocumented immigrants who live here.

Passaic Mayor Samuel Rivera's track record on dealing with illegal residents is commendable, first in his efforts to help maintain a day laborers' center, and secondly by pushing the effort to establish the "safe haven" status.

The problem is that in the absence of coherent national policy, local governments and states have tried to set their own rules. The result is a mishmash of ideologies and regulations. They range from the sensible, in New Jersey, to the more punitive, in Oklahoma. As the Passaic raids illustrate, however, even the most well-meaning of state and local policies can clash with federal entities and the uneven ways the United States deals with undocumented immigrants.

Passaic's "safe haven" status is good as far as it goes, but it can put the city's police in a delicate situation when federal officers come calling, asking for their assistance. Local police, in any city, need to maintain a trusting relationship with all segments of society, including immigrant communities.

Too many more raids such as those carried out in Passaic will destroy that trust. Passaic's police and city leadership need to understand this. And we, as citizens, need to understand that such raids do little to solve the issue of illegal immigration, and nothing to aid the greater cause of uniform and humane reform on the issue this nation so desperately needs.

    I will risk----

I will risk the slings and arrows of being called a racist, bigot or xenophobe, but I have seen the mayor of this NJ city on television. He speaks very heavlily accented English. I am not sure how he attained his citizenship or if he even is a citizen. All that aside, I have listed the council members too.
Loyalty to America is non-existent in a great number of people of Latino descent. They are loyal to their heritage, their ethnicity.
Those who come here legally are usually very good Americans. Those who obained their citizenship via the misinterpretation of the 14th amendment are not. They are America's Fifth Column. Their goal, which they consider to be noble, is to take over large parts of America and then either declare them sanctuary cities or aid and abet Illegal Aliens in their deceitful entrance to America.
What kind of pandering newspaper do you expect they would have???

Maybe they need the exact examples so they know the difference. I hate people who over exagerate the issues. My husband say's "I'm dying...or I broke my arm".....when he means "I'm tired and his arm had a cramp." Times like this I'd like to give them a taste of the real meaning of words.....slaves? And all the rest? Nothing like taking to extreems to make people feel sorry for you. Doesn't fly with me though. Nazi Germany gave no thought to "humanitarian excuses". Could care less if you were "breast feeding" or had children or were sick.....heck with as mouthy as many are.....they wouldn't have made it to the trains....let alone anything else. They'd have been dispenced with on sight.

    "Breast feeding" --
Years ago my father in describing permanent welfare recipients said they "nurse at the public teat" and the rest of us pay for it.

I am mad this so-called journalist doesn't have the courage to sign his/her name to this piece of dribble--but the majority of such propoganda is unsigned.

To compare ICE raids to the Nazi crimes shows this author's drama-queen dramatics and lack of knowledge of history.

We, as citizens applaud ICE and the Passaic PD of doing their JOBS! We, as citizens are sick and tired of anti-American sympathizers such as this writer and the city's mayor who have long done everything they could to stifle Passaic's citizens civil rights!

I have relatives still living in Passaic and let me tell you they are TERRIFIED of speaking up against illegal immigration!

It's a sad testament to the times in which we all live when CITIZENS are afraid of retaliation if they speak out against lawlessness!

Sorry, I do not see any problem! Two for the price of one! I see absolutely no issue with this as it appears to be great police work!

Also, who would be stupid enough to believe that when serving an arrest warrant, the police or ICE are not going to check out anyone who is present in that home at the time the warrant is served. The apple usually does not fall far from the tree and this seems to be one of those cases.

Ah, how sweet it is! The ICE agents/law enforcement are probably SMILING ALL THE WAY TO THE BANK! (also known as lining up those illegal criminal aliens in detention centers for deportation!)
