A group upset with Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio's policies on illegal immigration plans to call Wednesday for a federal investigation of the sheriff.

Congressmen John Conyers, D-Mich., and Zoe Lofgren, D-Calif., will join leaders from Arizona and other groups around the nation in presenting petitions with more than 35,000 signatures, calling for the Departments of Justice and Homeland Security to investigate Arpaio.

The petitions will be presented under a banner reading, "Americans United to Defend Civil Rights." The group said more than 2,700 lawsuits have been filed against Arpaio, including repeated allegations of civil rights violations.

Joining Conyers and Lofgren in presenting the petitions at the Rayburn Building on Capitol Hill will be Maricopa County Supervisor Mary Rose Wilcox; Gustavo Torres, executive director of CASA de maryland; Pablo Alvarado, president of National Day Laborer Organizing Network; Alicia Navejar, ACORN leader from Arizona; and Raquel Teran, project director for Maricopa Citizens for Safety and Accountability.
