Phoenix-area man sentenced for selling fraudulent identity documents
PHOENIX – A Mesa man identified during a probe by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) has been sentenced to four years in federal prison after pleading guilty to two counts of aggravated identity theft.
Luis Carlos-Reyes, 37, an illegal alien from Mexico, was sentenced Tuesday by Senior U.S. District Judge Roslyn O. Silver. Carlos-Reyes pleaded guilty March 29 to two counts of aggravated identity theft.
According to court documents, from July 2014 through December 2015, Carlos-Reyes sold numerous fraudulent documents to individuals in the Phoenix area. The documents included
Arizona driver’s licenses, Social Security cards, some containing actual Social Security numbers belonging to Arizona residents, and a lawful permanent resident card, often referred to as a
“green card.”
Additionally, when he was arrested in August 2016, Carlos-Reyes was illegally in possession of a firearm. The weapon was seized and will be forfeited as part of the sentence in this case.
The case against Carlos-Reyes was prosecuted by Melissa Karlen and Matthew Binford, Assistant U.S. Attorneys, District of Arizona, Phoenix.
