Plane Crashes in Apparent Drug Smuggling Attempt
Plane Crashes in Apparent Drug Smuggling Attempt
A small plane goes down in San Luis, Arizona, and investigators are calling it a failed smuggling attempt. Field workers reporting for duty found the wreckage of an ultra-light plane in the middle of a vegetable crop. It was just after seven when San Luis police got the call.
"When they arrived at the lettuce field, they found a small plane on the ground, and they did find inside a male subject deceased," says Lt. Luis Marquez.
That's not all. After detectives snapped pictures and took measurements of the scene, officers revealed four or five packages bound in plastic. According to a press release from the Yuma Sector Border Patrol, they were bundles containing more than 140 pounds of marijuana.
The pilot's identity is unknown. Where he came from is an even bigger mystery. With the crash site just a mile away from the border fence, officers will consider the possibility that the aircraft was part of a drug smuggling attempt.
"We don't know where it came from. No one saw it landing or hitting the ground. It appeared to happen in the middle of the night or early morning hours," says Marquez.
The Border Patrol says this is the second smuggling attempt in two months where smugglers tried to fly pot into the United States.
