Illegal immigrant found guilty of murder in fatal N.C. crash

SALISBURY, N.C. --An illegal immigrant who drove drunk in Rowan County has been found guilty of second-degree murder in the death of a pregnant woman.

A jury handed down the verdict for Rigo Verto Guillen-Martinez, who federal investigators have said is in the U.S. illegally from El Salvador.

Police have said he had a blood alcohol level more than three times the legal limit when he slammed into 20-year-old Leeanna Newman's Saturn Feb. 6 in Landis. Newman and her unborn baby died a short time later. Her 21-month-old daughter was in a car seat and suffered minor injuries.

Guillen-Martinez's lawyer had argued that his client couldn't be guilty of murder because there was no malice in his actions.

Guillen-Martinez will be sentenced Thursday. He could receive up to 30 years in prison.

what is it with the Spanish culture that they even think it's OK to get smashed with alcohol or drugs and drive..... do you think its cool... you have no idea how stupid you look in the first place when your drunk... if you knew.... you probably wouldnt drive

No malice in his actions? three times the legal limit and 2 living beings die so he could party freely with no consequences for his actions.

What happened to the death sentance ... 2 people will never wake up another day, will not smile, will not enjoy the sun rise... while this piece of uneducated trash can get out early for good behavior and start his killing spree again... I hope he gets hard labor then... picking beans/maters and taters for no pocket change to get drunk on... I hope he gets in a cell with Bubba that needs a girl friend for 30 years
