Preamble better welcome sign in Frostburg than 'liberal slogan'

    Bernard W. Miltenberger, Frostburg

Not so fast, Mr. Kerns! Your phony outrage is uncalled for about my questioning the of Mayor and Council of Frostburg about sanctuary for illegal immigrants on the proposed inclusive community program. To me, this was a very legitimate question concerning protecting and defending the laws of this country. We are a nation of laws, not a nation of liberal daily sentiments that PC police and smear merchants like you promote, and lead us down to the path of anarchy. Secular progressives like Commissioner Keller and Mr. Kerns drive their agendas literally down our throats with these smear tactics. What I want to see is that the Public Work Commissioner is doing her job as a commissioner and not fanning the flames of public sentiment.

For the record, I do not speak for the Mayor and Council in any manner, shape or form. Keller's, assertions that everything was smooth sailing through the work session is contrived. Eyewitnesses at this work session said to me, that when the issue was brought up the other commissioners questioned and seemed puzzled why Susan Keller would be interested in placing signs at the entrances that proclaimed that we are an inclusive community. My feeling is that we are already an inclusive community, so what is the point? Susan Keller never really sold the Mayor and Council on the need for this new program and just asked them to vote on a program that they were not familiar with. I clearly stated in my public comments that if the program really promoted and benefited race and ethnic relations, than I would be for it. I am not sure that putting a sign out does anything to really improve an already inclusive community.

Sanctuary cities like New York, Chicago, San Francisco, San Diego, Seattle, Houston, Austin and Los Angeles prevent police from arresting MS-13 gang members and other illegal aliens when they are in violation of their deportation orders. On Dec. 19, 2002, a 42-year-old woman paid the price for these cities' mayors' collusion in the wholesale breaking of America's immigration laws. Sitting on a park bench in Queens, the woman was seized - as her boyfriend was beaten senseless - dragged into a shack near Shea Stadium, and gang-raped by five homeless men for three hours. Four of the men were from Mexico, one from Ecuador. Four had previous arrests, two for serious crimes. All five were illegal aliens. Had the INS been alerted to their earlier crimes, they might have been deported and that woman spared her horrible ordeal. The NYPD never notified the INS.

In Washington, D.C., the nation watched paralyzed as 17-year-old John Lee Malvo, accompanied by John Allen Muhammad, shot 13 people, killing 10, in a 23-day terror rampage. Malvo, a Jamaican stowaway along with Muhammad, an illegal alien smuggler, detained for deportation was set free from Bellingham, Washington to head east to start this October, 2002 shooting spree. Examples like these gross refusals to enforce immigration laws are reasons for my deep concern over liberal programs like sanctuary.

Today, criminal aliens account for over 29 percent of prisoners in federal prison facilities, representing the fastest growing segment of the federal prison population. According to The Washington Times, 80,000 "absconders," illegal aliens convicted of such felonies as murder, rape, drug dealing and child molestation, who have served their prison time and been ordered deported, are now loose again on America's streets.

If the Mayor and Council of Frostburg are going to put up any signs about inclusion, they should put up a sign about the Preamble, the Constitution, its Bill of Rights and the civil rights act of 1964. "We the people of the United States of America," is the most inclusive statement of government known to mankind. This statement has stood the test of time and has promoted freedom around the globe. These are the values I want to see on a community sign, not some liberal slogan.

Frostburg excludes itself from "inclusive communties"

FROSTBURG, Md. - Frostburg may be an inclusive community but it refuses to be labeled as such.

People might get the wrong idea, say elected officials who voted 4-1 against joining the Partnership for Working Toward Inclusive Communities, a program of the National League of Cities.

Mayor Arthur Bond, who voted with the majority last Thursday, said proclaiming the city inclusive could be viewed as an admission that it's not.

Commissioner Susan Keller, who made the motion to have Frostburg join 98 other cities in 32 states that have committed to the program, was stunned.

"I was completely blown away by the vote," Keller told the Cumberland Times-News for a story published Wednesday. "All the partnership does is affirm in a public way a very simple thing, that we are an inclusive community. There is no down side at all."

The western Maryland city of 8,000 is home to Frostburg State University and a population that is 90 percent white and 6 percent black, with a scattering of Asian, mixed race and Hispanic residents, according to the 2000 census.

Commissioner Richard Weimer, who voted nay, said Frostburg is so inclusive that it could be a model for the program.

Keller said the issue became muddled when city resident Bernard Miltenberger suggested that joining the program could make Frostburg a magnet for illegal immigrants.

"This summer we went to the beach at Rocky Gap (State Park) and it was full of Mexicans. I'm sure a portion of them were illegal. We've gotten to a place in this country where we are being invaded," Miltenberger said.

He said Frostburg always has been a welcome and open place - for people who come here legally.

According to the National League of Cities' World Wide Web site, http://www.nlc.org, the partnership aims to promote inclusiveness and support affordable housing, race and ethnic relations, and equal citizen participation in community decision-making.

Two Maryland communities, Greenbelt and College Park, have already joined, according to the Web site.

Keller said the program had been misunderstood and that she plans to bring it up before the mayor and council again.

    Inclusive?

Frostburg, like every other town, can do better

    Cumberland Times-News

The Frostburg Mayor and City Council voted 4-1 last Thursday against designating the city an "inclusive community," essentially saying there's no room for improvement on race and ethnic relations in the Mountain City. Given the nature of some of the comments made during the meeting, we beg to differ.

"This summer we went to the beach at Rocky Gap (state park)," Frostburg resident Bernard Miltenberger said in opposing the inclusive community tag, "and it was full of Mexicans."

No word from Mr. Miltenberger on whether the Mexicans in question were among the handful of families who have decided in recent years to make Frostburg their home, and have established businesses there. But apparently Mayor Arthur Bond, and commissioners Richard Weimer, John Ralston and Doug Lemmert, feel that such a sentiment expressed by a prominent businessman and citizen activist, is no cause for concern. Because, as Mr. Weimer noted, "If it isn't broken, don't fix it."

Obviously, Frostburg doesn't need to - as the Inclusive Communities initiative declares - "make a public commitment to building an inclusive community." Nor is there any need to support "focused efforts around ... race and ethnic relations."

No, Frostburg is an inclusive community already, the four elected officials declared, even as the callous, hurtful remarks of Mr. Miltenberger still hung cold in the air.

Every community can do more to promote harmonious race and ethnic relations, and to foster an accepting, tolerant atmosphere for newcomers, as opposed to one of hostility and fear. Numerous municipalities across the land have embraced the Inclusive Communities certification of the National League of Cities, including Greenbelt and College Park, Morgantown, W.Va. and Clarksburg, W.Va., and York, Pa. and Carlisle, Pa.

Council member Susan Keller proposed the designation to demonstrate to residents and visitors alike that Frostburg is indeed a friendly, welcoming community. She said she was blind-sided by the opposition to such an innocent declaration. So were we.

    Frostburg Shuns Inclusive Label

This is rich........so they promote, eh? By 'promote' they mean they're working hard at getting a foothold in the social services to drain the cities' budgets and looking to drastically effect the political process.

Once in it's ACLU all the way! This is a slap in the collective American face. We sure as hell don't need yet another "national league" of anything!! And surely not one of INCLUSIVE CITIES. What a socialist scam!!!
