Plight of student stopped for speeding propels cause

Mercedes Gonzalez was stopped for speeding — going 48 mph in a 40 mph zone — several days before her Overton High School graduation in May.

Because she did not have a driver’s license, the 18-year-old girl was detained and screened for deportation.

Gonzalez, who was born in Mexico and moved here when she was 11, was released on her own recognizance. She will appear in immigration court, but no date has been set. She did not want to comment on the case.

Nationwide, students — both documented and undocumented — have launched a youth movement to persuade the federal government to change its immigration policies and help children like Gonzalez who were brought to the United States illegally. The students have initiated letter-writing campaigns and lobbied for support through Internet blogs and social media. A rally is planned at the Georgia State Capitol on Tuesday.

“The undocumented student movement is, perhaps, the most impressive contemporary social movement in the U.S.,â€

The only ones to blame are their parents for bringing them here Illegaly. and our own government for alowing them to live here long enough to let this happen. If they would enforce the law this wouldnt happen.

Should read: "Teens stand up in front of immigration judge."

Their parents and the government of Mexico have encouraged their feelings of entitlement, that laws pertain to everyone but them.

So will mercedes Gonzales,if not deported, get a work permit and a drivers license ?

If so that will encourage other IA's to step up,get arrested, then be able to drive & work in the USA. What have they got to lose by rolling the dice ??

Teens will never understand what illegals take away from the taxpayers since they dont pay taxes yet, plus most teens are rebelious against grown ups. They will do anything to go against adults. This girl has been here since she was 11 so there fore she knows the laws just like all illegals they think their above the law.DEPORT HER.

She should have been deported within 72 hours of being arrested. And she should not have been released until she was on the other side of the border! You're either here legally or your not! If not, you're gone!

This is where our immigration system is "broken!"

A 16-year-old Nashville boy was arrested Thursday on charges that he killed a mother and daughter in their south Nashville home, Metro police said.

Jose Presentacion Sosa, a former neighbor, is charged with two counts of homicide for the April 25 slayings of Lori Ann Rountree, 44, and her daughter, Adrian, 16.

Police said the bodies were found at the Creekside Drive home after Lori Ann Rountree, a nanny, didn't show up to work in Belle Meade. There was no answer at the door when Rountree's employer drove to the home, police said.

Sosa is expected to appear in court today, a relative said.
