The Texas Observer article is clearly a hit piece. It spends more time on criticizing the background of the textbook's author and her other work than it does on the textbook itself. The two times where it does take issue with the text it quotes it out of context giving a false impression. The article's first criticizes quoting Thomas Jefferson on the foundational concepts of the American republic. The second criticism is justified. All who identify as Chicanos are not revolutionaries. Some view it as just mean Mexcian-American mestizos while others attach political meaning to the term. In my skimming through the book the only fact I could disagree with is using the terms Mexica and Aztec as equivalents. If I were of Mexica heritage I would be upset with this because the Aztecs subjugated the other Mexica in the most brutal empire known to history.
