Rape story in today's Oakland Tribune

Story in today's OAKLAND TRIBUNE (May 7, 2005 http://www.oaklandtribune.com ) about Ignacio De La Fuente, Sr., who came to America 40 years ago as an illegal immigrant, and today is one of the leading candidates to replace Jerry Brown as Mayor of Oakland. His mayoral candidacy took a setback when his son and namesake, Ignacio De La Fuente, Jr, 32, was arrested last week for two brutal rapes, one involving a 15 year-old-girl who he kidnapped, grabbed right off the streets and raped and beat her.

Missed the part about him being an illegal.I know he is a strong reason for Oakland becoming primarily Latin in East Oakland but didn't know he's an illegal.Couldn't find anything anywhere about him being illegal-maybe you can help?

Hi Rick. The Oakland Tribune print version was a much longer article than the web version. The description of Fuentes Sr as a former illegal immigrant can be found at http://www.sfgate.com . Do a word search for "Ignacio De La Fuentes" which will take you to the article from May 6 ("Son's Arrest Torments Councilman"). The sfgate articles have more specific details about the attack on the 15 year old.

Illegal immigrants and their first impressions

I might be piling it on here. But if we had deported Ignacio De La Fuentes, Sr. 40 years ago (like we should have), Junior wouldn't be here 32 years later. And we, the American tax-payers, wouldn't have to pay to house him (in prison) for the next 20-something years. I think it raises a very important argument for being VEHEMENTLY against any amnesty plans for illegals. "First impressions are very revealing." If somebody's first act in this country is to flagrantly break our laws, why should we assume that they'd be any more respectful of our laws during the rest of their stay here?

This isn't Junior's first time in trouble with the law either.
