WASHINGTON (AP) -- Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid says he's committed to passing an immigration reform measure this year as the White House turns its attention to the issue.

The Nevada Democrat, who's in a tight re-election race with Republican Sharron Angle, could benefit politically from enacting a broad overhaul. He pushed for legislation in the spring to provide an eventual path to citizenship for many illegal immigrants in the U.S., but shelved the plan when other Democrats declined to jump on board.

President Barack Obama on Thursday tried to breath new life into the stalled immigration reform effort, and blamed the delay on the GOP. He says Republicans are giving in to the "pressures of
partisanship and election-year politics."

Obama also wants to create a pathway to citizenship for illegal immigrants.
