RENO, Nev.—A Reno man with ties to a gang that originated in El Salvador and has been deported three times for illegal entry to the United States has been sentenced to up to 15 years in prison for a fight that left a man paralyzed.

Daniel Lopez-Bonilla asked Washoe District Judge Janet Berry for leniency Wednesday because he's already serving two years for unlawful reentry by an alien and soon will be deported again.

But Deputy District Attorney Kelly Ann Kossow said each time he has returned to the U.S. and committed more crimes. He and another man were convicted of battery with a deadly weapon in the 2010 beating and shooting of a Reno man.

Police said both have ties to the Hispanic gang known as MS-13, or Mara Salvatrucha.
