Republicans Name Panel to Investigate 'Stolen House Vote'

Republicans Name Panel to Investigate 'Stolen House Vote'

(CNSNews.com) - House Republicans have launched an investigation into what they're calling the "stolen illegal immigration vote." They say House Democrats cheated on Aug. 2, during a vote on a Republican proposal to bar taxpayer-funded benefits for illegal immigrants.

According to House Republican Leader John Boehner, the GOP proposal passed 215-213 on the night of Aug. 2. But Democratic leaders promptly reopened the vote and allowed several Democrats to change their minds.

When Democratic leaders ordered the vote closed for a second time, the Republican motion was defeated -- and taxpayer-funded benefits for illegal immigrants were restored, Boehner said.

Based on conversations with constituents back home, Republicans apparently believe that the "stolen vote" issue will resonate with voters, and they've named a select committee with subpoena power to look into what happened.

The panel, announced on Wednesday, is expected to report its preliminary findings to the House by September 30, 2007, with a final, comprehensive report due by September 15, 2008 -- just a few months before the general election.

Boehner named Rep. Mike Pence (R-Ind.) as the ranking Republican member of the panel, which will be evenly divided between Republicans and Democrats. Other Republicans joining Pence on the committee will be Rep. Steve LaTourette (R-Ohio) and Rep. Kenny Hulshof (R-Mo.).

In announcing the panel on Tuesday, Boehner called it a big step toward "rectifying the injustice that took place on the House floor during the first days of August."

Said Boehner, "The August 2 vote to bar illegal immigrants from receiving taxpayer-funded benefits was not just stolen from those who voted for it on the House floor; it also was stolen from the American people, who pay billions in taxes each year and should not have to worry about it ending up in the pockets of those who knowingly break the laws of our country."

Boehner urged the panel to "move with urgency," since "the American people's trust in the House is on the line."

"If we do not act quickly to guarantee the integrity and accountability of a vote on the floor of the House of Representatives, then we will have done our institution, the American people, and democracy itself a great disservice," Boehner said in a news release.

In a memo obtained by the Washington Times, Republicans aides were quoted as saying they don't think rank-and-file Democrats "fully appreciate the magnitude of this matter."

"This investigation will continue throughout the remainder of the 110th Congress and serve as a reminder to the American people that Democrats (1) became so power thirsty that they were willing to go so far as to cheat, and (2) 'cheated' on a motion to deny illegal immigrants taxpayer-funded benefits like housing assistance," the memo reportedly said.
