Rescue underway for suspected illegal immigrant

Border Patrol agents assisted by the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department's Copter 1 are working to rescue a suspected illegal immigrant from a canyon east of Otay Mountain.

Agents came across the woman traveling with a group of at least six others about 6:15 a.m. in the remote and rugged area about one mile south of state Route 94, Border Patrol Agent Mark Endicott said.

Her companions ran away when agents encountered them but the woman, believed to be in her 30s, had suffered a knee injury and couldn't make her way out of the canyon, Endicott said. Agents apprehended the others.

The helicopter was dispatched about 8:15 a.m., Endicott said.

The people who were taken into custody were all Mexican nationals suspected of being in the country illegally, Endicott said.
