Grullon taken into custody for deportation

Officials from the federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement took Willy Grullon into custody on Block Island early last Thursday morning to begin a deportation process. Grullon was apprehended as he left his Dodge Street apartment and taken to an awaiting Coast Guard cutter in Old Harbor. The New Shoreham Police Department provided assistance, said Chief Vincent Carlone.

A native of the Dominican Republic, Grullon was arrested on Block Island in 2005 for drug trafficking and spent nearly three years in prison. Before the conviction he was considered a resident alien. However, according to Paula Grenier of the ICE office in Boston, Grullon’s “criminal historyâ€
