Panel wants meeting with RI gov over immigration

PROVIDENCE, R.I.—Clergymen want to schedule a delayed meeting with Rhode Island Gov. Don Carcieri to discuss his executive order targeting illegal immigrants.


A group including Roman Catholic Bishop Thomas Tobin sent a letter Monday asking that Carcieri meet with an advisory panel he formed after his order sparked concern from immigrant and religious groups.

The order requires State Police and prison officials to identify illegal immigrants for possible deportation. It also forces government agencies to electronically verify the immigration status of new hires.

In January, the panel concluded that the order was misunderstood and feared. It wanted another meeting in May or June to hear Carcieri's reaction.

Carcieri spokeswoman Amy Kempe said the meeting has been pushed into September because of scheduling conflicts.
