Two of the five kids were part hispanic so Ruben was referring to kids that consider themselves loyal to the USA. The kids that are loyal to Mexico are his amigos.

"The cultural right wants to cast the story about teenage boys who got in trouble for wearing flag T-shirts as evidence that Americans are losing control of their country. Actually, it's evidence of something more real and thus more troubling -- that many Americans have already lost control of their kids."

Oh and the Latino kids who were in danger of committing violence are under the control of their parents?

"and that there was something racist about the assumption that Mexican-American teenagers would react to the Stars and Stripes like a bull reacts to a red cape. "

ooooh . . . always willing to play the race card. If the entire nation of Ireland came here willing to work for peanuts the reaction of the displaced would be the same - oh yeah, that did kind of happen didn't it? But then they assimilated, and rapidly, something we aren't seeing here.

"Assistant Principal Miguel Rodriguez -- fearing that the boys' attire might provoke a violent response from Latino students who told reporters that they see the faux holiday as "their day" "

Ohhhhh . . . so the principal is the racist here?

Now every loyal citizen of Mexican descent is going to be under constant scrutiny for where their loyalty lies. If all of the illegals simply go home things will be much easier for all of us.

This guy needs to be on the problem journalist list.

I meant to add that this discriminatory discipline has been happening in the workplace for decades as well - part of why we have had enough!

Welcome to the real world kids! If you are loyal to your nation you need to learn that your loyalty is misplaced. Were any of those kids in ROTC? Or planning on a career in the police department?

Initially, I was prepared to argue that Rodriguez overreacted, that the boys' rights were trampled on, that the American flag shouldn't threaten anyone, and that there was something racist about the assumption that Mexican-American teenagers would react to the Stars and Stripes like a bull reacts to a red cape.
Let's get real, Ruben Navarrette. You and everyone in the free-world knows you never even considered such a move.
