SAN ANTONIO — The San Antonio City Council has voted to denounce a new Arizona law that requires police to ask about people's immigration status if there's "reasonable suspicion" they're in the country illegally.

The Arizona law takes effect July 29.

By an 8-3 vote, the council adopted a resolution that not only condemns the Arizona law but also declares opposition to any efforts by the Texas Legislature to copy the action.

Mayor Julian Castro drafted the resolution opposed by council members John Clamp, Elisa Chan and Reed Williams.

Two state Republican lawmakers have announced plans to file legislation similar to Arizona's law, although Republican Gov. Rick Perry has come out against calls for similar laws in Texas, saying it "would not be the right direction" for the state.
