President OKs new border crossing to Mexico in San Diego County

SAN DIEGO

President Bush has given final approval for a new border crossing east of the Otay Mesa Port of Entry.

The proposed crossing received a presidential permit late last week.

It would be built by the federal government and be connected to state Route 905 by a 2-mile toll road to be built by the California Department of Transportation.

Officials say the $800 million cost of the project would be covered by toll fees.

The additional crossing is expected to ease travel and trade between the United States and Mexico.
