Federal Grant Will Help Fight Border Crime

SAN DIEGO - A $5.5 million federal grant will help San Diego County sheriff's deputies fight border-related crime in the South Bay and rural East County.

The grant, formally accepted by the county Board of Supervisors Tuesday, will pay for salaries, surveillance cameras and license plate readers, as well as increased flights by sheriff's helicopters, said Jan Caldwell of the sheriff's department.

The grant is part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's "Operation Stonegarden," a $60 million grant program aimed at beefing up law enforcement along U.S. land borders
